The Switch To Government Student Loans in 2010

The switch to government student loans in 2010 is underway. Given the new law that cuts out the middleman in the student loan process, financing college should be an easier affair.

The cost of higher education is beyond most students and their families. This makes student loans a foundation of any upper level degree. Getting those loans has been an up and down affair because most of the money was routed through private banks even though the money was provided by the government through the Department of Education.

To save money approximately $62 billion over the next decade, the government has cut out the middleman banks. This effectively means that the loan process will be one that is handled directly by the Department of Education, something that did not happen previously.

The question most students and parents should be asking is “how does this impact me?” The answer is it really doesn’t at first glance. You will still be able to get funding, but the source of that funding will change. Most of the funding will not be available through federal subsidy loans. The good news is there will be more of it and it will be easier to get.

The terms of those loans will be different because they will not be funded by the government. They were previous and that money came with restrictions on interest rates and so on. Make sure you read the terms of any private bank financing closely as the unwary may be subject to some very bad deals.

The student loan industry is changing radically this year. The good news is most students and their families will not notice.
